BARRHEAD-Christmas this year was a little brighter for the residents of Barrhead's Golden Crest Manor.

On Dec. 23, the more than 50 residents of the independent living residence operated by Barrhead and District Social Housing Association (BDSHA) received an early Christmas turkey dinner with all the trimmings thanks to the staff at Sanderman's Home Hardware.

Store owner Dave Sawatzky said he knew residents of BDSHA’s four senior residences might have a difficult holiday due to the pandemic and associated restrictions.

Especially difficult, he said, was the restriction on social gatherings would mean residents would not be able to see their families or even local friends or relatives even if they were in the same complex.

"Not only are they not going to be able to see their families, but they are not going to be able to go into the main lodge because of the restrictions, so they are going to be alone," he told the Barrhead Leader a date before the giveaway.

Golden Crest, Jubilee Manor and Klondike Place, while all separate facilities providing different services, are physically attached to their main assisted living facility-Hillcrest Lodge.

Sawatzky also said it was unlikely that the residents would have the ability to cook their own elaborate Christmas meal so they decided to take it upon themselves to provide one for them, albeit a day or two early.

"We just thought it was important that everyone have the best Christmas they could given the time we are living in. We also wanted to give back to the community and say thank you," he said.

The dinner was prepared by Laura's Steak and Pizza.
