Columbian-born singer Cristian de la Luna, left, recounted to a lively audience at the Nancy Appleby Theatre Nov. 28 when his family first came to Canada 17 years ago. Every night the host would ask “Voulez-vous du gâteaux?” (Do you want cake?) and every night the family would refuse because in Spanish the word for cat is ‘gato’ so they wondered at this strange Canadian tradition of asking people if they wanted cats after a meal. A tongue-in-cheek story to be sure, and one of many de la Luna told over the evening between singing in French, English, and Spanish. One of his three band members, guitarist and keyboardist Raphael Freynet, is seen on the right. The Heartwood Folk Club will be starting up with a limited four-performance run in the spring and you can subscribe to their newsletter at heartwoodfolkclub.org to stay informed. Heather Stocking
