Its cute downtown, lined with historic buildings and unique shops, will make you feel like you've stepped back in time, but with plenty of modern comforts that we’ve grown to expect and rely on in the 21st century. Whether you're an outdoor lover, a big fan of all things food and beverage, or just someone looking for a low-key place to visit, Cochrane delivers. Let’s talk about all of the must-dos in town to prove why this spot is at the top of our underrated list.

Explore Cochrane's Western Roots at the Historic Cochrane Ranche

Start your visit at Cochrane Ranche, Alberta's first large-scale cattle ranch, which operated from 1881 to 1888. In winter, the park transforms into a snow-covered dreamscape. With over 130 acres, there’s plenty of room to wander and discover its deep history. Be sure to check out the iconic Men of Vision statue, a local landmark overlooking the beautiful valley. Take a stroll through the remains of the Old Ranche buildings and enjoy the peaceful quiet of the season.

Stroll Along the Bow  River at Riverfront Park

For a peaceful break, head to Riverfront Park. This scenic spot along the Bow River is perfect for a family walk, an outing with your dog, or some snowshoeing along the Bow River. Riverfront Park is a great stop for everyone. While this area isn’t exactly famous for its beaches, this wide river will make you feel like you’re sitting lakeside.

Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park is equally breathtaking in winter and only minutes from the town. It has 3,200 acres of protected native grasslands and is an active cattle ranch. Enjoy stunning trails through the rolling foothills with gorgeous mountain and Bow River views on nearly 40 km of paved and shale pathways. It's a hiker's paradise, especially at sunset when the golden hues hit the landscape perfectly. Look out for cattle, and be sure to close the gates behind you.

Discover the Beauty of Big Hill Springs Provincial Park

Big Hill Springs Provincial Park takes on a new charm in winter. The small waterfalls freeze into natural ice sculptures surrounded by snow-covered trees. It's a magical, family-friendly spot for a short hike or winter photo shoot. If you love getting outside but the cold has you second-guessing yourself, just put on those boots.
