COLD LAKE - A suspected act of vandalism has resulted in the release of 60,000 litres of crude oil from a Check Energy Ltd. well site, located 26 kilometres south of Cold Lake.
On March 22, Cold Lake RCMP was notified of suspected acts of vandalism at four oil and gas locations in the MD of Bonnyville, near Beaverdam, Alta. Unknown suspects entered the lease sites, owned by Check Energy, some time in the evening of March 21 and allegedly caused significant intentional damage.
The damage has since been repaired, and ground tests have been initiated. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as additional information becomes available, according to information from RCMP.
According to Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) data, the spill involved crude oil and was classified under “Emergency Phase Over” as of the most recent update. The AER’s incident reporting system provides updates on energy-related incidents but notes that information is based on initial reports and may be subject to change as investigations continue.
The AER is responsible for monitoring and responding to energy-related incidents around the clock. AER staff are trained in emergency response, environmental protection, and air quality monitoring, and assist in coordinating efforts with responsible operators and relevant authorities to ensure public safety and environmental protection, according to the AER website.
Cold Lake RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance in acquiring information in relation to this incident, and those responsible.
