Officer-involved shooting leaves man dead after Cold Lake RCMP respond to stabbing complaint

COLD LAKE - A man has died following an incident with police in Cold Lake on Dec. 14.

At about 8 p.m., Cold Lake RCMP responded to a 911 call of an attempted stabbing at a transit stop on 50th Street and 43rd Avenue.

"Two officers arrived and located the male subject armed with an edged weapon," according to information released by police just after midnight on Dec. 15. "Officers used their intervention options, including a firearm, to bring the subject into custody."

The subject was then brought to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

"No officers or other civilians were injured during this incident," according to police.

"In compliance with legislative requirements, the Director of Law Enforcement was immediately notified resulting in the deployment of ASIRT to conduct an independent investigation. The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and in so doing will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators," reads information from RCMP. "Events like this are difficult for everyone involved."
