Five charged in alleged car theft, arson and standoff in Northern Alberta

Police dog and RCMP tactical units used in Kehewin car jacking arrests

Bonnyville RCMP are releasing details and information about the people charged in an alleged crime spree in the Kehewin community last Sunday.

On Friday, June 28, police announced that five people are facing charges in connection to an alleged car-jacking and arson that lead to a police standoff at a Kehewin home.

On Sunday, June 23 the Bonnyville RCMP received a call from a victim advising that she’d been carjacked at knife-point in Kehewin by two males.  As RCMP made their way to the call, there was a reported sighting of the victim's vehicle in a field in Kehewin with four or five people standing around it. Moments later more reports said the vehicle was on fire and the offenders were seen running towards a house in Kehewin.

Police Dog Services were called to the area and assisted in tracking suspects. RCMP say one suspect was found in a treed area near the burning vehicle, and was arrested.

Police then surrounded the house and attempted to communicate with anyone inside.  Two men came out of the house and were taken into custody by RCMP.

Emergency Response Team

Two more suspects were believed to be remaining  in the house. Police say there was reason to believe the suspects had hidden themselves and could be armed.

Local police maintained a watch on the home while the RCMP Emergency Response Team from Edmonton made its way to the location. Shortly after the tactical team arrived, two more suspects came out of the house and surrendered to police.

Early the next morning, using a search warrant, officers went into the home, locating two firearms.
