BANFF NATIONAL PARK – A 26-year-old female skier was taken to hospital in critical condition after a skiing incident at Sunshine Village Ski Resort Sunday (April 20).

The woman, who was skiing down the black diamond run known as ecstasy, when it’s believed she hit a roller at high speed, said Kendra Scurfield, Sunshine Village Ski Resort’s vice president of marketing and communications.

Scurfield noted the woman was wearing a helmet and the incident was seen by a senior instructor at the snow school.

“Our team responded within minutes to the incident and transported her to our infirmary, where the decision was made to call STARS,” Scurfield said.

“It was reported that her condition was improving during the transport down the mountain. We did have a doctor on site and [emergency medical technicians].”

Paramedics and STARS Air Ambulance responded in the afternoon to the ski incident.

Shane Paton, a spokesperson for Alberta Health Services emergency medical services, said Banff paramedics responded at about 2:15 p.m. to Sunshine Village Ski Resort.

“Paramedics treated an adult on scene who was then transported to hospital by STARS air ambulance,” he said.

Kate Langille, a spokesperson for STARS Air Ambulance, said they responded to the call and took the woman to Foothills Medical Centre in critical condition.

“Our team at Sunshine is committed to providing a safe and fun experience,” Scurfield said.

“We are thankful to have Bow Valley [emergency medical services] as resources to work with. We wish her a healthy recovery.”
