FROG LAKE – Elk Point RCMP seized over 200 grams of suspected illegal drugs during a patrol on the Frog Lake First Nations, Dec. 12.

At around 12:30 p.m., officers attempted to stop a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) during the patrol, according to information released on Dec. 16 by RCMP. The driver tried of the UTV tried to flee but surrendered after a brief pursuit.

Police arrested 40-year-old James Kuzyk from Edmonton and took him into custody.

Elk Point RCMP say they found what is suspected to be 188 grams of methamphetamine, 10 grams each of cocaine, crack cocaine, and fentanyl, along with cash and drug trafficking paraphernalia after searching the UTV and the driver.

“This is a significant seizure of drugs that will not be sold in the communities we serve," said S/Sgt. Stephen Nolan, adding that Elk Point RCMP.

"Removing drugs from the streets helps protect public health and safety, reduces crime rates, and prevents substance abuse," added Nolan.

He also thanked the Frog Lake Security Team and emergency services for assisting in the recovery of the UTV, which police determined to be stolen.

Kuzyk was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He was released on a $500 cash bail and is scheduled to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in St. Paul on Jan. 9.
