Calgary police have successfully captured a suspect in a carjacking incident where a woman was allegedly assaulted as she picked up her child from KidStrong earlier this month.

According to police, the carjacking took place as a woman and her son were leaving KidStrong Health and Wellness centre, located at 9950 Macleod Tr. S.E. on Sunday, Sept. 8. As they were getting into her 2007 Kia Rio, an unknown man attempted to steal the vehicle. A brief struggle occurred between the suspect and the woman, and as a result, she was physically assaulted several times, and sustained minor injuries.

Bystanders came to the aid of the victim after her son sought help; however, the suspect was successful in stealing the vehicle.

The CPS Robbery Unit detectives quickly identified the man as an individual who had been released from custody earlier in the day. As the investigation progressed, several members from various areas across the Service were involved in searching for the suspect.

On Friday, Sept. 13, at approximately 6:15 p.m., police were called to the area of Bearspaw Dam Road and 85 Street N.W., for reports of an unknown man believed to be car prowling in the area. Thanks to information provided by the public, officers were able to swiftly arrest the man who was identified as the suspect from the Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, carjacking incident.

Wayne Aaron Canning, 43, of Calgary, was charged with robbery, mischief to property, theft, and several breaches of a release order.

Canning remains in custody and will next appear in court on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024.

Anyone with information about this incident, or who has information about the whereabouts of the Kia, is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
