ELK POINT – This year’s addition of the Alberta segment of the National Chinese Congress Drumming event will put Elk Point on the national stage on Canada Day, when it joins cities across the nation for a live-streamed simultaneous session of Chinese drumming by not only the group of Chinese drummers, who normally perform in Calgary, but with members of the public who will receive tiny handheld drums to shake along during the prescribed amount of time.

With Elk Point’s participants added to the numbers of drummers from cities from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the resulting total could set a new simultaneous drumming record in the Guinness Book of Records.

This unique opportunity was brought about by Mayor Parrish Tung’s visit with members of the congress in Edmonton, and adds another multicultural touch to the celebration.

The drumming session will be held at the Canada Day stage north of A. G. Ross Arena, with lineup at 11:30 a.m., with the drumming to start on the stroke of 12:00 noon.

Because of the 11:30 start, the Friends of the Library’s pancake breakfast will run from8 to 10 a.m. and the Canada Day parade will start up Main Street promptly at 10:30 a.m. to allow everyone to head up to the stage area to take part.

Other additions to this year’s lineup are an interdenominational church service at 10 a.m. Sunday, a soapbox derby on 51 Street at 3 p.m. Sunday and a Family Challenge following the stage show on July 1 at 4:30 p.m. to make this the busiest weekend of the summer, and a weekend packed solid with events you won’t want to miss!
