The Town of Barrhead wants to help bring in 2015 with a bang. Literally.
On Dec. 31, the town’s annual New Year’s eve celebration, Family First Night, will end with the launch of a fireworks display.
Brandy Siegert, of the Barrhead Parks and Recreation Department, said the fireworks display would be the perfect way to cap off a night of family friendly events.
“It is just a great opportunity for everyone in Barrhead and the surrounding communities, to come to the Agrena and spend some time together and celebrate the New Year in a safe and fun environment,” Siegert said.
Over the years, she said the event has evolved into what it is today.
In past years, she said the town would organize a large bonfire along with a free public swim and skate.
However, due to safety concerns, Siegert said the town decided to no longer hold a public bonfire.
“We don’t want anything to happen, plus with the unpredictability of the weather, we thought it would be best if we held everything inside,” she said.
Of course, with the aquatic centre closing and later demolished, there will no longer be a public swim, but there will still be a free public skate at the Agrena.
In addition to the public skate, Siegert said there will be refreshments, including a special New Year’s cake. Town staff will also be giving out a free goodie bag to those attending the event.
“There will be hats, horns, beads, everything you need to celebrate the coming of the New Year in style,” Siegert said.
Of course the most popular part of Family First Night is the fireworks display starting at 9 p.m.
The fireworks will be launched from the Barrhead sports grounds. Although Siegert said the fireworks display can be seen from many areas in Barrhead, the town is inviting everyone to come to the Agrena and watch the show.
“If it is cold people can park their cars in the newly paved parking lot at the Splash Park or in the Agrena parking lot, watch the show and then go home and spend the rest of New Year’s eve with their families.
Family First Night festivities will be held at the Agrena starting at 7 p.m. and ends shortly after 9 p.m. with the fireworks display.
Although all the events are free, the town will be taking donations of non-perishable food items for the FCSS Food Bank.
