The Town of Barrhead is putting $1,000 towards a Community Program and Resource Guide being published by local non-profit organizations.
Town councillors approved a request for the grant from the Blue Heron Support Services Association, which is working on a committee with Barrhead Adult Learning, the Barrhead Public Library and Barrhead Family and Community Support Services to develop the guide as a resource for information about programs, events, businesses and services offered in the community.
The committee estimates the cost to create and print 2,000 copies distributed via Pembina Hills School Division. Digital copies would also be available through the municipalities' websites.
The project has a proposed $5,600 budget with $1,000 of its own funds, and plans to raise another estimated $2,600 from advertising.
Barrhead County council denied a similar $1,000 grant request at its Feb. 7 meeting, saying the participating organizations all receive government funding already.
Town Chief Administrative Officer Edward LeBlanc noted in his report that the guide would mean the Town would not need to publish its own standalong summer program guide, resulting in a budgetary savings of about $3,000.
Coun. Rod Klumph suggested the Town fund the grant from the recreation budget instead of its grant budget since it would replace budgeted spending. LeBlanc indicated staff would do so.
The motion by Coun. Dausen Kluin to provide the grant passed unanimously.
