BARRHEAD – Two local educators have been recognized with the Exemplary Teachers Award, while another has been named Honorary President for the 2025 North Central Teachers' Convention Association (NCTCA) convention.
The achievements were formally acknowledged at the Pembina Hills School Division Board Meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
Michelle Savoie Recognized for Innovative Teaching
Michelle Savoie, a junior high teacher at Eleanor Hall School, received the Exemplary Teachers Award for her dedication to students, her school, and the wider community.
“She's a rockstar,” said school trustee Maureen Schnirer. “She introduced cosmetology this year and is a wonderful person who truly deserves this award.”
Savoie, a science teacher, is known for fostering independent, creative, and critical thinking in her students. Her lessons emphasize inquiry-based learning, encouraging students to explore scientific concepts through hands-on experiments and hypothesis development.
She is recognized for tailoring lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners, ensuring an engaging and supportive classroom environment. Parents commend her for her clear communication and dedication to student success, while colleagues and students alike praise her professionalism, creativity, and enthusiasm for education.
Robert Smith Celebrated for Engaging Teaching Methods
Robert Smith, a Grade 6 teacher at Barrhead Elementary School, also received the Exemplary Teachers Award for his outstanding contributions.
“He has been a great addition,” said Brett Cooper, Superintendent of Pembina Hills School Division, echoing widespread praise for Smith's work.
Smith is known for his energetic teaching style and innovative classroom activities, which range from launching handmade rockets to incorporating rap songs into lessons on science and math. His approach captivates students and fosters a love for learning.
Beyond the classroom, Smith is dedicated to his students' personal growth, creating a supportive and encouraging environment where they can develop confidence, creativity, and independence. His influence extends to colleagues, who describe him as an inspiring mentor with an infectious enthusiasm for education.
Joanne Wallace Named Honorary NCTCA President
Joanne Wallace, a longtime educator with the Pembina Hills School Division, has been named Honorary President for the 2025 NCTCA convention, a prestigious role recognizing her contributions to professional development within the teaching community.
Selected from among 1,500 members, Wallace has been involved with NCTCA since 2008, initially serving as a local school representative and chairing convention sessions. Since joining the NCTCA Board in 2012, she has played a key role in updating the association's constitution and advancing technical innovations.
Among her most memorable moments, Wallace said she was particularly honored to work with Olympian Waneek Horn-Miller and mathematician John Mighton. Hosting online convention sessions has been a highlight of her involvement.
Wallace’s leadership and dedication to the profession continue to shape the development of educators in the region, making her selection as Honorary President a fitting tribute to her career.
