WOODLANDS COUNTY – Woodlands County council reappointed Reeve Dave Kusch for another year at council's organizational meeting Oct. 23.
Kusch has held the Woodlands county council reeve position since 2023.
Coun. Jeremy Wilhelm, representing Whitecourt-East, nominated Kusch.
County interim chief administrative officer Rod Hawken called for additional nominations for a second and third time but there were no others given.
Councillor John Burrows, representing Whitecourt West, gave a motion to close nominations for the reeve position.
Hawken then declared Kusch was acclaimed as reeve for another year.
“Thank you, guys, again, for the faith and support,” Kusch said.
Kusch represents Division 1 for Anselmo. He was elected to council in December 2019 and again in 2021. He was first elected as reeve in June 2023 in place of Burrows, who had stepped down from the role.
In addition to the reeve duties, Kusch sits on several committees.
The reeve position appointment is a requirement of the provincial Municipal Government Act. The Act states the chief elected official can be a mayor, reeve, or I.D. chairperson, according to the Alberta.ca website.
The reeve is responsible for being chairperson for council, the consensus seeker, the liaison with senior elected officials, and the key representative for ceremonial activities.
Reeves are also responsible to be the liaison with other levels of government and provide advice on any policy development. These responsibilities are over and above their councillor responsibilities.
