BARRHEAD- It could have been much worse.
That is what Barrhead RCMP Sgt. Bob Dodds said following a Aug. 4 collision between a gravel truck and a small sedan at the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 33, also known as the two-mile corner.
Shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, a sedan was travelling south and attempted to cross the highway when it was struck by a gravel truck. The driver of the car, a 25-year-old County of Barrhead man, was taken to a hospital in Edmonton via STARS Air Ambulance.
"Mostly as a precautionary measure, because I don't believe his injuries were life-threatening, " Dodds said.
He added that the female passenger was taken to the Barrhead Healthcare Centre and treated for minor injuries.
"The semi-driver was able to swerve enough that he got the back end of the vehicle crossing the road. If he had not, we might have been looking at two fatalities," Dodds said.
Dodds added the driver of the car is facing several charges including failing to proceed safely after a stop sign, operating a motor vehicle contrary to the restrictions on his driver's licence, as well as a charge of having alcohol in the vehicle in violation of his driver's licence restrictions.
