Lego Christmas ornament challenge at Barrhead Library

LEGO Group #BuildtoGive campaign on now

BARRHEAD – There is an interesting challenge happening at the Barrhead Library with two activities happening at the same time, one local and one global, and both centre around creating ornaments out of Lego.

“I thought it would be fun to do giveaways, so we call it the 12 days of Lego Christmas,” said Kyle Hughes, known as Mr. Lego at the Barrhead Library.

“For every ornament you make we share it online then I put your name in a draw to win a present every day.”

Last year, there was so much interest in the ornament program that the Barrhead Library ran out of Lego, completing 1577 ornaments.

This year, as of Friday, Dec. 13, there have been 1,730 ornaments created and more to be built.

The Barrhead Library has a new Lego tree where they display the ornaments, and they rotate the selection every day.

The LEGO Group’s Build to Give campaign encourages everyone to build a festive decoration, share it on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn with #buildtogive and LEGO will give LEGO kits to people in need.

They are giving away up to 1.5 million LEGO sets, and the heart-themed campaign runs until Dec. 31.

There is one Barrhead builder who has won library draws more than once, in fact he wins every year. He won in draws last December and has already won this year. This builder wanted the sonic Lego prize and was at the library when the draw occurred.

Hughes had asked him to spin the wheel, and his own name came up.

The wheel is a computer-generated spinner with each builder’s name on it and there is no way to make the wheel choose your name.

It is a push of the button, and the weight used to tap the button determines where on the wheel it will land.

There have been so many builders that you cannot see names on the wheel, the slices are so small.

The odds of this builder winning are 1 in 1400 according to Hughes.

There is still time for people to build a heart-themed ornament and post it online, so some less fortunate children receive LEGO kits.
