Lac La Nonne's highly anticipated Fishing Derby coming up

Ice fishing at Lac La Nonne Lake in the annual fishing derby is a ton of fun

LAC LA NONNE – This Family Day weekend you don’t need a licence to go fishing and Lac La Nonne has a fabulous event planned hosted by Lac La Nonne Enhancement Protection Association (LEPA).

On Feb. 16 at Klondike Park on Lac La Nonne Lake the annual fishing derby takes place with all kinds of fun for the entire family.

“If you catch a fish then your name goes in for the prizes,” said Rod Kause, one of the organizers that has been involved with the fishing derby over the last 10 years.

Registration for the fishing derby starts at 9:30 a.m. at Klondike Park.

Families can speed up the registration process by registering on the website in advance at www.lepa-ab.com.

The fishing derby runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when the excitement happens where derby participants use their best skills and techniques to catch a fish.

Fishermen need to bring their own gear.

There are some amazing prizes and a 50/50 draw will be held.

You don’t want to miss out on a chance at the prizes which include Oiler tickets, a $200 Visa gift card, a Husqvarna chainsaw, A Celsius ice shelter, and more.

Prizes winners will be named and raffle draws will be happening at 2:30 p.m.

Kause has been out on the ice over the Feb. 1 weekend and said that the ice was a foot thick.

With the colder weather the ice will be thicker, and Kause said there have been trucks out on the ice.

There were 200 people at last February's fishing derby.

Kause said in previous years it has mostly been experienced fishermen, but it is a family friendly event to experience ice fishing.

If a person wants to try ice fishing it is a good idea to watch some  videos and learn about some of the basics before coming out to the ice to fish.

Dressing warm and having layered clothing can be a significant benefit when out on the ice.

There will a second Fish for Free Weekend on the second weekend in July where you don’t need a licence to fish.
