Barrhead Cares and FCSS presents the Make the Connection Event on Sept 5

BARRHEAD - CARES Coalition and FCSS are hosting the Make the Connection event on Thursday, Sept. 5 at the Barrhead Curling Rink next to the Aquatic Centre.

Leah Jackson, FCSS Program Coordinator, said that there are already 46 organizations registered with more coming in.

This is a much-anticipated annual event where people can learn about the types of services and extra-curricular activities that are available to area residents.

The event has something for everyone from kid-focused groups to adult interest organizations with a great cross-section of services, agencies, and organizations that local folks will want to make or learn about.

The event gets started at 3:30 p.m. and runs until 7 p.m.

Free hot dogs will be available starting at 3:30 pm cooked by Barrhead firefighters. Pembina West Co-op has generously donated the hot dogs, pop and water. Freson Brothers is also helping out with donations.

Jackson expressed her appreciation to those considerate groups donating to the event and helping add to the enjoyment for everyone who attends.

This is the ninth year the Barrhead CARES Coalition is hosting the Making the Connection event.

Originally Barrhead’s parks and recreation department organized the event.

The Barrhead CARES Coalition was originally known as the Barrhead and District Drug Coalition.

Their mandate was to address the problems related to the effects of drugs and alcohol use in the community.

In 2012 they changed their name to the Barrhead CARES Coalition to encompass their growing objectives.

Barrhead CARES works with the community through advocacy and community development.

They are a group of agencies and volunteers through all sectors of the community that collaborate together to reduce barriers to services.

Committee members include Mayor David McKenzie, government representatives, FCSS, the Barrhead library, and Alberta Health Services.
