BARRHEAD – The stands were packed at the Agrena for the Barrhead Skating Club Carnival on March 15 with skaters ready to show-off their skating skills in the diamond themed event.
There were 20 special performances by skaters ranging from skaters just starting out to medal winners at this year’s competitions.
Master of ceremonies Stacey Lyons shared stories and successes of each of the skaters and groups introducing them to the audience with pride and happiness.
“We celebrate our 60-year diamond anniversary in the Barrhead Skating Club,” said Lyons.
There were nine solo skating performances by talented graceful skaters.
Evelynn Bartholow was the first soloist skater. She was a hard worker who passed two levels of testing.
At the Westlock competition and she received silver for Star 2 free skate and silver for Star 2 elements.
Layla Blaikie has been skating for seven years and earned two silvers in competition this year and passed two skating level tests.
Arizona Lyons has achieved success in passing all four Starskate disciplines.
She competed in Camrose in December placing fourth in her freeskate and seventh in artistic which was her first time competing at those levels.
Peyton Lovich is a veteran Starskater as well as a coach and trainer.
She has passed several skate level tests and placed fourth in Freeskate and Artistic categories at the Camrose competition.
There were two duets and one trio skating performance.
The group skates were fantastic with the Starskate group starting off the event with their routine in sparkling skirts.
Canskate Red and Green groups were delightful to watch as dwarfs skating to ‘Heigh Ho’ from Snow White.
Canskate Blue and Green groups were glittering in their routine.
Canskate Orange and Purple groups were shimmering as they performed their skating moves.
Sparkling skaters in the IntroSTAR group dazzled the audience.
Lyons recognized the new coach Lisa Golden for her hard work with the Canskate and Starskate skaters.
Golden grew up skating in Whitecourt starting at the age of three.
This is her 21st coaching season as a regional coach.
“Lisa is super passionate about towards all the disciplines and it shows when you watch her interact with all the skaters,” said Lyons.
She has done amazing work with the Barrhead Skating Club.
