Barrhead Orioles lose to Westlock Red Lions in NCABL action

Late rally attempt snuffed out by close play at third

BARRHEAD/WESTLOCK - It was a tough outing for the Barrhead Orioles, who lost to their Highway 18 North Central Alberta Baseball League (NCABL) rivals, the Westlock Red Lions, 14 to 7 at home on July 3.

Westlock started quickly, scoring nine unanswered runs in the first two innings, five in the first and four more in the second, to cement their victory.

It looked like Barrhead might make a game of it starting in the third inning when they scored five runs, going through their entire batting order, but unfortunately for the Orioles, they could not sustain the momentum, and Swan Hills blanked the next two innings. The home team would score one more run in the sixth. For a short time, it looked like the Orioles might make a late rally after they got two runners on base late in the seventh inning, scoring one, but their comeback was snuffed out when Tyler Caughlin was called out in a close play at third when he tried to turn a double into a triple.

Barrhead's next home game is on July 10 against the Parkland Twins. First pitch is 7:15 p.m. Westlock's next home game is also Wednesday, July 10, against the St. Albert Cardinals, also starting at 7:15.
