Barrhead makes an impression on overseas tourists

A heartfelt message from tourists who enjoyed the hospitality of the Museum volunteers and the Town of Barrhead

Tourists who recently visited Barrhead were so impressed that they sent an email to the town office singing praises and thanking the town for cherished memories.

Kia ora,

I recently visited the town of Barrhead. I was born in Barrhead, Scotland, and I have always known that there was another Barrhead in Canada. I now live in New Zealand.

When we were at our friends wedding in the Florkevich family farm near Stony Plain I just couldn’t resist a visit and photo opportunity at the Welcome to Barrhead sign.

Google told me that the museum was closed but I had a look anyway. While I was walking around the building a young lady pulled up in a Ute and asked me if I wanted to see inside, she was on the committee, with her sister, who had a key.

10 minutes later we were inside and reading all about the history. A James McGuire named the town after his home town in Scotland. His family would have moved to Scotland from Ireland. My wee granny Peggy McGuire may well have been related.

Anyway we enjoyed your museum. It provided a great picture of the early pioneers and life in general for the residents of the town. Awesome to see that your townsfolk resisted racism in your schools.

We grabbed some beers from an off-licence and headed up to Thunder Lake for lunch.

So just a quick note to say that it was great to visit Barrhead, Alberta. Thanks to the two very lovely ladies who took time out of their day to show us around. What an awesome memory.
