BARRHEAD – There is a group of Pathfinder and Ranger girls that have an exploratory trip planned to Hawaii to learn about environmental impacts and programs like Save the Turtles in August of 2025.

Fundraising for the trip is currently underway and everyone is excited about the trip.

“The girls are quite interested in the culture, and they are very community based,” remarked volunteer leader Megan Pederson.

“The group wants to look at environmental impacts and animal observation, learning about environmental concerns.”

They will be selling Girl Guide cookies on October 7th in a door-to-door campaign according to Pederson.

The Girl Guides will also be at the De Herdt Gardens' Art Exhibition on Sept 28 selling cookies and crafts.

This year cookies can be bought and donated back to the Guides for a program that will provide a letter and box of cookies to military personnel as they are deployed.

Girl Guides has activities and adventures for girls of all ages.

“Girl guides is a wonderful experience for girls to build great friendships, try new things, do crafts and learn about survivals skills including fire and fire safety.” stated Pederson.

Barrhead Girl Guides needs more volunteers to join them in supporting the 21 girls who are registered to participate in Girl Guides this year.

Interested girls can register to join at any time online but now is the best time to get involved so all the fun and events are not missed.

Girl guides are split into four age levels groups that have a volunteer leader and have to have a second volunteer 18 years or older to participate in the meetings and activities from Sept to April.

Pederson is leading two groups this year the Rangers, ages 15 to 17, and the Pathfinders, ages 12 to 14.

Her Leader name is Raven.

Tamara Marinupti, leader name Chickadee, is the volunteer leader for the Guides group, ages nine to 11.

Larissa Montgomery will be taking over as volunteer leader for the Sparks, ages seven to eight, from her mother, Carla Montgomery who is retiring from her leadership role with Guides.

Carla’s leader name is Cactus and Larissa has not received her leader’s name as of yet.

Larissa has been in guides since she was a Spark.

There is online training for volunteers with the corporate Girl Guides group to ensure people have all the information they need to be confident working with their groups of girls.

Girls who are interested in joining can register online anytime.

They can even apply for a subsidy to help with costs during the registration process.

The Barrhead Girl Guides meet on Monday evenings at the Splash Park right now and are looking for an indoors meeting area according to Pederson.

Barrhead Girl Guides have partnered with the Pembina West Co-op to sell cookies in their front entrance in past years.

Two overnight camp-outs are also planned with a tenting adventure scheduled for next June.
