BARRHEAD — The Barrhead community will come together to celebrate the contributions of local volunteers at the 2025 Volunteer Appreciation event, set for Tuesday, April 29, at Bethel Pentecostal Church. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., with the event concluding around 1 p.m.
The Barrhead Public Library recently confirmed the nominees for 2025 are:

Anja and Dennis Donkers, nominated by Trisha Enman.

Evelyn and Ken Anderson, nominated by Kristen Kremp.

Daniel Wierenga, nominated by Derek Silgard.

Nikolas DeGroot, nominated by New To You.

Food Bank Volunteers, nominated by Family and Community Support Services (F.C.S.S.).

Barrhead Cares Coalition, nominated by the Barrhead Public Library.
According to nomination information posted by the Barrhead Public Library, the Donkers were recognized for their extensive contributions to major community events, including the Street Festival, Festival of Trees, and Light Up Barrhead. The library noted their volunteer work ranges from organizing animals for events and educating youth to supporting newcomers and local non-profits.
Evelyn and Ken Anderson were praised for more than 30 years of service with the Barrhead 4-H and Agricultural Society. Evelyn has been a key leader in 4-H horse projects, helping youth develop riding and barn management skills, according to the nomination.
Daniel Wierenga was acknowledged for his leadership roles with the Barrhead Golf Course and Barrhead Minor Hockey, as well as his long-time service with the Neerlandia Sports Committee. The library noted his contributions to recreational infrastructure, including an outdoor rink.
Nikolas DeGroot, who has volunteered at local thrift stores since his school years, was recognized for his ongoing commitment to operations at New To You. His work ensures a consistent flow of donated goods for the community, according to the nomination.
The Food Bank Volunteers, nominated by F.C.S.S., were celebrated as a group for their work ensuring families in need have access to essential food resources, especially during challenging times.
The Barrhead Cares Coalition was nominated for its role in promoting mental health, wellbeing, and community resilience through local programs and initiatives.
“The purpose of Volunteer Appreciation is to recognize the selfless dedication of our volunteers. Many charities, programs, and special events would not exist without volunteers,” the Barrhead Public Library stated.
The event is organized by the Barrhead and District Volunteer Appreciation Committee and supported by several community partners. Tickets are available for $5 through the Barrhead Public Library and the Barrhead and District FCSS Society.
