FCSS is launching its senior transportation bus service with a planned trip to Fort Assiniboine on July 18 visiting the Gem Café and the Museum.
Registration for the $35 per person trip is filling up and will be taken until July 11 at the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) office, the cost covering the meal and transportation.
“It is very exciting to be able to deliver this service to our residents and to the community,” Karen Gariepy, Barrhead FCSS director said.
“We hope that within a couple years we can ensure that it is a sustainable on-going program.”
Ricki Sutherland, project leader with FCSS, was at the Senior’s Expo, providing information on the new Senior’s Transportation program.
FCSS has zoned out the county, and each Monday, a different zone will go out to an outing or go shopping.
Tuesdays and Thursdays will be specifically for medical appointments and Wednesdays will be for Barrhead residents’ outings including groceries, shopping, errands. The bus will pick residents up and take them out.
Friday runs will be for 55+ social events, according to Sutherland.
People can call and make an appointment to come into the FCSS office to register to take advantage of any of the weekday services.
Information is collected on needs of the participants for services and any medical conditions to ensure staff is prepared to handle an emergency for their passengers.
There are two vans available, one of which can accommodate wheelchairs. The other is a minivan and carries seven people.
There was a contest to name the bigger van. The winning name is Van-Go, suggested by Dean Clarkson.
For medical appointments, FCSS will reserve a spot for your transportation and take you to your appointment. This service is for one person at a time.
The weekday services are available right now and FCSS is open for appointment bookings by phone at 780-674-3341.
