FORT ASSINIBOINE – The Fort Assiniboine School held a touching assembly and event honouring the memory of Terry Fox on Sept 26.
The principal, Greg Ferguson, started the assembly and handed the mike to two student MCs, Riley Ronaasen and Tohar Peled.
“Who was Terry Fox?” asked Peled.
“Terry Fox raised money because kids had cancer and he felt sorry for them and he decided to raise money for them,” shared one young student.
Vintage videos of Terry Fox’s first run and when he had to stop his run due to health problems was played for the assembly.
On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox started his run to raise money for cancer research. He ran more than 5,000 kilometres from St. John's NL to Thunder Bay, Ont. before being forced to stop on Sept. 1, 1980. He died in June 1981, and the first Terry Fox run was organized in September 1981.
After the presentation the students started their own run in honour of Terry Fox. The students ran out to the Marina and circled back.
The Fort Assiniboine School raised $1,500, exceeding their goal of $1,220.
The students had worn their orange shirts in remembrance of Orange Shirt Day and the sea of orange made its way down the main road of town for all the town residents to see.
After the run DDC Trucking sponsored a burger lunch with Little Ranch Café doing the cooking. Woodlands Marina provided ice cream.
