While the week begins wet, Environment Canada's seven-day forecast for the Athabasca region is predicting warm summer weather for Canada Day long weekend

ATHABASCA — Athabascans are in for another wet beginning of the week for the tail end of June, with rain and dark skies in the forecast until Thursday. But Mother Nature is expected to come through with sunshine and warm temperatures in time for the much-anticipated Magnificent River Rats Festival slated to run June 30 and July 1.

According to Environment Canada’s seven-day forecast, the week will begin with a cloudy Monday bringing a 30 per cent chance of showers. Winds from the west at 20 kilometres an hour may gust up to 40 km/hr, and a high of 20 degrees is expected.

Around five millimetres of rain will come by way of showers overnight, with temperatures dropping to 10°C.

Precipitation is predicted to end on Tuesday morning, followed by a mix of sun cloud and a 30 per cent chance of more showers. The afternoon will bring risk of thunderstorms, a daytime high of 21 degrees with a high UV index, and a low of 11 degrees is expected overnight.

Wednesday is forecast to be cloudy with no rain and a high of 23°C, with showers at night and a low of 13 degrees.

More rain is anticipated for Thursday, which will bring cooler weather — daytime temperatures aren’t expected to exceed 17 above, and dropping as low as 9 above Thursday night.

The start of the weekend may mark a turn in the weather; Friday is expected to be sunny with a high of 20°C, but overnight temperatures may dip again, with a low of 9°C.

Make sure to pack sunscreen for any long weekend activities, as Saturday is anticipated to be a sunny day with a high of 22 degrees and an overnight low of 11 above. Sunday skies may carry both sun and cloud, and temperatures could reach as high as 24 degrees.
