The Visitor Information Centre (VIC) will be run out of the old train station for the summer of 2014.
In a meeting of the tourism and economic development committee on April 23, it was decided the committee would pay the rent for the space from the May long weekend to the September long weekend.
TED committee members from town and county council will now take a request back to their respective councils seeking funds to hire one full-time employee for those months. According to TED committee member Joanne Peckham, they are hoping the cost will be split 50-50 between the town and county.
Peckham said it will be good to have the centre in the same place.
“The visibility is going to be good. If it is starting to work, the last thing you want to do is change it,” she said. “If people are conditioned to knowing that’s where you go, we want to keep it there for the time being.”
Last summer, the VIC employed two full-time staff members. Because the TED committee is only seeking one employee this time around, the committee is hoping to utilize volunteers to help run the space.
Plans have also been discussed for alternate future locations for the VIC, including the old brick school, and other means of interacting with tourists who visit the area.
“We want to save money for additional tourism-related things,” Peckham said. “We don’t want to put all our eggs in one basket.”
