UPDATE: Traffic detours to remain in effect in downtown Athabasca

Drivers heading through Athabasca today should expect to take a few more corners than usual as crews continue to fight a large structure fire at the Grand Union Hotel, located at the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 55.

Crews continue to fight a large fire at the Grand Union Hotel in Athabasca. Travellers are advised to expect detours and delays as heavy equipment and emergency crews work in the downtown core.

Drivers heading through Athabasca today should expect to take a few more corners than usual as crews continue to fight a large structure fire at the Grand Union Hotel, located at the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 55.

According to an RCMP release sent at 11 a.m., traffic has been diverted in the name of public safety and access for emergency crews.

Eastbound traffic on Highway 55 is diverted at 51 Street, redirecting through to 48 Avenue.

Westbound traffic on 55 is diverted at 48 Street, redirecting through 48 Avenue.

Southbound Traffic on Highway 2 is diverted at 48 Avenue.

Motorists are advised to avoid the downtown area and follow all posted detour signs. The RCMP ask that travellers allow extra time for travel and exercise caution to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and other road users.
