BOYLE – It takes people of all types to make a community. From super-volunteers to multi-generational families to dedicated business owners, each small town boasts its own unique feel thanks to the people that call it home.

Boyle’s 2024 recipient of the Community Spirit Award was nominated by Linette Dufault, who praised his kind heart, understanding nature, and fiscal support for the village’s many charities in her letter.

“I would like to nominate Amit Parmar. He is the kindest and most compassionate person you will meet,” wrote Dufault.

“There isn’t a better person for this award.”

Village councillors agreed with Dufault, presenting Parmar with the award during the Jan. 15 council meeting. Accompanied by family, Parmar accepted the award, thanking councillors for their kind words.

“We’re proud to say you’re from Boyle, and we hope you’re proud to say you’re from Boyle,” said Mayor Colin Derko during the brief ceremony.

“You and your family are an important part of the community, and it’s not just some people that notice that. Keep doing what you’re doing and keep making our community a better place.”

Unlike previous award recipients, Parmar’s contribution to the community doesn’t come from personal involvement in every event. Instead, Derko and others noted his willingness to help support charities, work with the Royal Canadian Legion, and kind-hearted approach to running a business as exceptional characteristics.

“What we’re looking for is somebody who is dedicated to the community and just spins a positive factor for Boyle everywhere they go,” said Derko.

“Somebody like Amit, he does volunteer but maybe not as much as someone who has more time; he’s really busy with his business. But he shows up to all the events, he steps up whenever he can as far as donations go, and he’s always been very pro-Boyle.”

Previous winners of the award include 2023’s recipient, Robyn Jackson, who was recognized for her work leading a 4-H club in Boyle — and the greater Athabasca area — and 2022’s winner Lindsey Stanton, who was recognized for her work behind the scenes and as a volunteer.
