ATHABASCA — Athabasca residents in certain areas of town will have to make due in the heat without power for five hours amidst a heat warning from Environment Canada.

The planned Fortis Alberta outage will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m., according to an alert posted to the Town of Athabasca’s advisory alert platform. The outage will affect 22 residences along 54 Street, and both 44 and 45 Aves.

For more information on the outage, contact 310-WIRE.

The outage comes amidst a second consecutive week of heat warnings for the province from Environment Canada. With temperatures for the Athabasca area expected to reach a high of 31°C with Humidex real-feel value of 38°C, Environment Canada recommends spending time in cooled indoor spaces and drinking plenty of water and non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverages to stay hydrated.

Children and infants, seniors, individuals with pre-existing health conditions, outside workers, and the unhoused population are more at risk to develop heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Alberta Health Services recommends checking on neighbours, friends, and family during extreme heat events. Individuals in need of a place to cool down are encouraged to visit neighbours or public spaces with air conditioning or take a cool bath or shower.
