Joanne Peckham has declared herself as an unofficial candidate in the race for Christine Nelson's spot on Athabasca Town Council.
"I have worked alongside of many great leaders, presidents and councillors, " she said. "I have stood among so many volunteers who give their full support to the causes they believe in. "
Peckham was elected as a councillor in 2001, but her run on council was short since she moved out of town in 2002. She also was a candidate in last October's election.
"I want to be part of our town council again. I enjoy being involved in our community and I would like to help in the process that continues seeing our community thrive and prosper, " she said. "I share concerns with our new town intersection, our medical shortages, historical support and preservation. "
Peckham wants to continue supporting Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and helping those who need it.
"I recognize the lack of affordable housing and rentals for lower income individuals and families, " Peckham said. "I share in the frustrations in getting our town more visibly exposed. "
Peckham wants issues in Athabasca resolved.
"I too do not understand why buildings are allowed to stay vacant and unoccupied either, " she said. "I share in the frustration with the Barbara Bell situation as well. "
Peckham worked as the Chamber of Commerce manager in the 1990's, has sat on the Design Review Committee, and has looked after the police, ambulance and fire department portfolios.
"I have 25 years in retail experience, and for nearly a decade I was involved in the local media as operating manager for our local radio station, " she said. "I was a founding organizer and member of the Magnificent River Rats for over a decade (and) I have been involved in the planning of Moonlight Madness and customer appreciation day for the chamber. "
Peckham is a member of this community that has the passion and time to commit to being a town councillor.
"I am no different than anyone else that shares similar concerns in our community, " she said. "There is a strong perception that the town does not listen to it's people, and I want to be part of a council that helps to include its community members … and to help them all understand the process of the government, and to be made to feel like they are part of the process. "
She said she has the utmost respect for the councillors who unselfishly give up their time to help the community.
"I have a weekday 9-5 job, my children are on their own, and I have the time to be pro-active and dedicated to council and the community, " she said.
In the weeks and months to come, Peckham hopes to see other members of the community run for council. She wants the people to have a voice.
