ATHABASCA — Clean up at the site of the former Grand Union Hotel has begun once again.

Residents may have noticed the presence of equipment and trucks at the site after the early October efforts to clear the rubble away were halted for unknown reasons.

Town of Athabasca councillors granted an extension for municipal clean-up orders sent to owner of the property, Jaspal Singh Bopari, in September. The initial order stipulated the site needed to be cleared by Sept. 16, but councillors received a request from Bopari for an extension, one council granted until Sept. 30.

After the halt of the efforts that began after the amended Sept. 30 deadline, councillors again revisited the topic during closed session discussions at the Nov. 5 meeting. A motion to file a court order for the clean-up of the site was passed unanimously.

Bopari himself and equipment were on site and working ahead of the Dec. 10 court date.
