County approves $242,144 contract for owner's representative for new pool

Athabasca County council has approved an owner’s representative contract with RPM Consulting Ltd. for $242,144 to oversee the construction of the proposed new swimming pool and fitness centre at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

Athabasca County council has approved an owner’s representative contract with RPM Consulting Ltd. for $242,144 to oversee the construction of the proposed new swimming pool and fitness centre at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

Funds for the contract were allocated in the 2013 and 2014 budgets, and the motion to give the contract to RPM Consulting was passed at council’s regular meeting last Thursday.

Contract finalization is subject to written acceptance from the Town of Athabasca for a 50/50 partnership.

Following in-camera discussions last Thursday, county council passed a motion stating councillor Jack Dowhaluk will only be permitted to attend regular county council meetings and regular public works meetings until the October 2014 organizational meeting.

Dowhaluk will not be permitted to attend meetings of committees on which he sits, such as the county recreation board and the county library board.

The curtailing comes after a ratepayer recently discovered Dowhaluk had claimed remuneration and mileage for five meetings in 2013 that he did not attend.

On Feb. 28 at 10 a.m., Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) will be hosting the grand opening of its new building. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held followed by refreshments at 3598-48th Avenue.

“We’re very happy to have a new facility for the staff to run their programs out of,” said Brian Pysyk, director of corporate services for Athabasca County.

“They’re a very dedicated group of people here, and they certainly deserve this new building to serve all the people for years to come.”
