Bigstone Cree Nation is imposing an ATV curfew in its communities for the next three months following an increase in crime.

WABASCA – Bigstone Cree Nation (BCN) is cracking down on late-night ATV usage following rising crime rates across the nation’s communities.

In an Aug. 29 release the band posted to Facebook, Chief Andy Alook said his council was deeply concerned by the recent rise in crime, much of it associated with quads or other off-road vehicles.

In response, BCN, which couldn’t be reached for comment, implemented a three-month long curfew which will prohibit usage between 9 p.m., and 7 a.m. in all seven communities.

The band will be working with the Wabasca, and Athabasca RCMP detachments to help enforce the curfew, with officers dedicating more time to nighttime patrols in the area.

“We ask that all community members remain vigilant and cooperate with any new measures that may be introduced. Together, we can work to restore peace and security in our community,” said Alook.

Neither the Athabasca nor Wabasca detachments were available for comment before print.
