BOYLE – A midsummer night of drinking led to a physical altercation between an out-of-towner and a Boyle RCMP constable earlier this summer after the man spent his Sunday evening looking for a fight in the village.
David Perron was bashful during his Boyle Court of Justice sentencing, apologizing for his behaviour and promising it wouldn’t happen again. His sentence, which was handed down by Justice Joanne Heudes Oct. 8, will see him spend the next year on a conditional discharge order in Fort Saskatchewan. He’ll also have to complete 15 hours of community service over the coming months.
“It does look like an error in judgement,” said Justice Heudes. “Be good for the next 12 months and this will just go away for you.”
Perron’s ill-fated Aug. 4 encounter with the Boyle RCMP started at the Motor Inn in Boyle. The Crown said the RCMP received a call regarding an “intoxicated and belligerent” individual — Perron — and the only on-shift constable attended. Perron, who had been the subject of an earlier call for trying to fight people inside the inn, was located by the constable.
After being informed he was under arrest, he pushed the arresting officer in the upper body. After continuing to assault the officer, a conducted energy weapon (CEW) was used. Perron then kicked the member, before a CEW was deployed again.
Perron later apologized while in the cells and was released on an appearance notice once he was sober.
“Alcohol, it gave me poor judgement; I quit that day,” said Perron, who appeared in person for his plea.
If he completes his conditional discharge and community service, the incident won’t go on his criminal record.
