UPDATE: Jasper National Park closes, ordered to evacuate due to wildfire

JASPER –  An evacuation order for Jasper National Park was issued Monday night not long after the same order was given to people in Jasper due to a wildfire.

At 10:18 p.m. an updated alert was issued through the Alberta Emergency Alert System which added that people in the park also had to evacuate along with people in the townsite of Jasper.

“Everyone in Jasper and Jasper National Park must evacuate now,” the alert said. “There is a wildfire south of town. An Evacuation Order has been issued for the Town of Jasper and Jasper National Park.”

The alert covers Improvement District No. 12 and Jasper.

Evacuees are advised to travel west on Highway 16 towards British Columbia. Evacuation to take place between 10 p.m. on July 22 and 3 a.m. on July 23, the park posted on social media.
 
"Follow direction from local authorities and obey the speed limit," it advised.
 
"Travellers en route to Jasper National Park must travel back in the direction they came from, unless directed otherwise."
