BANFF NATIONAL PARK – The Cascade Falls Trail and parking lot are closed until further notice while RCMP and Parks Canada enforcement search for a missing person believed to be in the area.

Banff RCMP was notified last night (Aug. 27) by the originating RCMP detachment of the missing person’s file that the individual may be in the area, which prompted a search.

“We’re following up on some clues for the current location of that person and visitor safety is there along with law enforcement from Parks,” said Banff RCMP Staff Sgt. Mike Buxton-Carr. “The idea is that we’re going to locate the person and assess their current state.”

During the search, RCMP and Parks Canada located a vehicle belonging to the missing person around Lake Minnewanka.

Buxton-Carr said a further ground and aerial search conducted of the area, specifically the aerial scan, led officers to near the Cascade Falls trailhead.

No further details regarding the search can be shared at this time.

“We’ll be able to release the area back to the public as soon as we know we don’t need to hold the scene anymore,” said Buxton-Carr.

The area will remain closed until further notice and more details are expected to be released once a search is complete.
