Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) is introducing an Electric Vehicle Charging Program (EVCP), a program that will provide $1.7 million in funding to successful applicants for the purchase and installation of EV charging stations in communities across Alberta.

Funding for this program is provided by Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).

Applicants can receive a rebate of up to 46 per cent to offset eligible project costs.

Tyler Gandam, President of Alberta Municipalities, said the EVCP puts the purchase and installation of EV charging stations within reach for more organizations across Alberta, helping set the stage for further EV use in Alberta by residents, businesses and visitors alike.

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, added that every year, hundreds of thousands of Canadians are switching to EVs and saving on fuel and maintenance.

"To support Canadians driving EVs, the Government of Canada is working with not-for-profits like Alberta Municipalities to build reliable and readily available charging options," Wilkinson said. "We are pleased to invest in building EV charging stations for drivers in Alberta and across Canada.”

Applications will be accepted starting Wednesday, Feb. 5. Funding will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. All applications will be assessed on their merits and must meet strict criteria.

Eligible applicants include businesses, community related organizations, condominium corporations, cooperatives, Indigenous communities, industry associations, institutions and schools, municipalities, non-profit organizations, and others, on a case-by-case basis
